Buying a New Toaster

Toasters are an absolute necessity in any kitchen - how else are you going to make a proper breakfast? There are numerous choices of toaster available to you - from small 2-slice toasters meant for tiny kitchens and single people, through to enormous 6-slice toasters to serve entire families at once. These are available in all kinds of shapes and colours - allowing you to pick the perfect colour to complement your kitchen.

You can also pick a toaster with a number of different extras - such as a special warmer for buns and croissants, warming & defrost settings, and even a viewing window to watch your toast cook!

Toaster Sizes

This is the most fundamental choice when choosing a toaster - how much bread it can cook at once. Most toasters have 2 slots, allowing 2 pieces of toast to be cooked at once. For most single people or small families this will be enough, since you will rarely need to toast more than 2 pieces of bread at once. However for larger families there are toasters with 4 or even 6 slots - these allow for a far larger amount of bread to be cooked at once.

Some toasters also advertise themselves with ‘long slots’, which mean they have extra-long opening for the bread - which is especially useful for wider, squatter loaves, such as sourdough, or for fitting more slices into a single slot.

Lastly, we have some models of toaster that have a 'high lift' feature built in. This allow you raise the toaster lever up and raise the bread clear of the toasting slots, making it easier to remove. This is a helpful extra if you find yourself frequently toasting crumpets, muffins or small slices of bread.

Custom browning levels & programs

Nearly all major brands of toasters allow you to change the time the bread is toasted for, allowing you to cook the toast to exactly how you like it. Some newer models also contain preset ‘browning levels’, allowing one-touch light/medium/dark browning for your breakfast. While this is not a must-have addition, it can certainly make your life easier first thing in the morning, before your morning coffee has woken you up.

Additionally, many toasters will also contain additional preset programs for defrosting frozen bread, cooking bagels, or for warming toast back up again.

Some more advanced and expensive models of toaster have an added visual flair to them - a glass viewing window in one or both sides of the toaster. As well as serving an aesthetic value, it also allows you to more clearly see how your bread is toasting, so you can pause the toasting at the correct time.

Extras

Finally, some toasters come with additional extras, either purely aesthetic or to provide additional uses. These can include things such as a special warming rack that can be used for buns or croissants, a special holder for making toasties, or a viewing window that allows you to watch your bagels browning as you sip your morning coffee.

The price range of toasters is from $11 to $680 and in total we found prices for 178 toasters. A new toaster costs on average $98 and 80% of toasters are priced between $27 and $223. The cheapest toaster that we found is the Brentwood Appliances TS260B at only $12, and the most expensive is the KitchenAid 5KMT2204EFP at $680.

Toaster Brands - Price Range

The highest average toaster price out of all brands is KitchenAid toasters with an average price of $287. KitchenAid toasters start at $70 and their most expensive toaster costs $680.

The average price of Magimix toasters is $282 which is the second highest average price of all toaster brands. Magimix toasters start at $282 and their most expensive toaster costs $282.

AEG toasters range in price from $249 to $249, and the third highest average toaster price out of all brands is AEG toasters with an average price of $249.

We have analysed 31 expert reviews and 7,474 user reviews for toasters and used this data to calculate the average rating for each brand of toaster. The top rated toaster brand is Russell Hobbs with an average rating of 88%. The second best brand is Morphy Richards with 82% and the third best brand is Dualit with 82%.

Biggest Toaster Retailers

The biggest toaster retailer by number of products currently for sale is eBay. We found 125 current toaster offers from eBay. The second biggest retailer is Overstock with 10 offers. That means eBay is over 12 times bigger than Overstock when it comes to toasters.

When Are Most New Toasters Released?

We looked at the release dates for new toasters over the last 3 years, but couldn't see any obvious trend. In February 2018, 18 new toasters were released making it the biggest month that year for new toaster releases. The biggest month in 2017 for new toaster releases was November, with 55 new toasters released that month. 106 new toasters were released in September 2016 making it the biggest month that year for new toaster releases.

How Fast Do Toaster Prices Drop After Release?

On average toasters drop in price by 10% in the first 6 months after release.

That means a saving of $10 on a typical $98 new toaster if you wait 6 months before buying.

The slices of toasters range from 1 slice to 8 slice. The slices of the majority of toasters range from 2 slice to 3 slice. The toaster with the most slice is the Black & Decker TO3230SBD, which is a toaster that takes 6 slice slices and currently retails for $56.56. The toaster with the least slice is the KitchenAid 5KMT3115, which is a toaster that takes 1 slice slice and currently retails for $242.90.

The main colour of the toaster.

The most common colour amongst new toasters is black. We found 220 toasters that are toasters that have a black coloured. Stainless steel is the second most common colour amongst new toasters. We found 196 toasters that are toasters that have a stainless steel coloured.

Which Are the Cheapest Retailers for Toasters?
