Everybody loves a good deal - managing to secure some money off a purchase is just *so* satisfying! Here at Kagoo we’re all about those deals - we’ve got a whole section dedicated to finding the best discounts, voucher codes and other tempting offers! Today we’re going to look at a specific example: clearance offers.
Clearance offers are usually the stock the retailer wants to get rid of quickly - either because they cannot be sold full price due to any number of issues, or to clear space for newer stock. This means they can be significantly cheaper than usual… but there may be a trade-off in condition or quality. This article will outfit you with all the knowledge to get the best bargain without any nasty surprises!
Finding Clearance Deals
First off: finding the clearance deals. Most online shops you visit will have some form of deal page - this is where all the current discounts, voucher codes, free gifts, etc are collected together. Some retailers will include the clearance deals on this page, but a large amount relegate them to their own page - meaning you may have to do some hunting before you even find the clearance deals! Luckily, we’ve done the work for you - behold the Kagoo Clearance Master List:
The list will be updated as we find new clearance pages. It’s worth taking the time to click around several of them, since each one will have different clearance deals available.
Ebay is also a very good resource for finding clearance deals - although you may have to search around to find them. These days the majority of the products sold on eBay are new rather that second-hand. However some retailers do have clearance or outlet stores on eBay, which generally offer different deals than their main sites. Some good examples to get you started:
Hopefully a bit of time searching around the sites we’ve mentioned will net you some very exciting discounts - however before you dive in too deeply, it’s worth bearing a few things in mind, just so you’re not caught by surprise.
Tips for buying clearance items
Clearance items normally have a limited supply - the retailer may be emptying out whatever stock is left, or clearing a small number of ex-display products as the season changes. So be prepared to act fast - jump on the deals when you can, because they may not come back.
Clearance offers may be updated frequently - check clearance sites often to see if anything new has been added.
Don’t assume that every clearance item will be the same - always read the description carefully. The two most important things to note are the product’s status and condition.
Status: this shows how much the product has been used, and what state you will receive it. Possibilities include:
Ex-display - was displayed in a shop, may have been handled and lightly used
Open box - was bought and returned by a customer unused. May or may not come in the original box.
2nd hand - not new, has been used by a customer and returned.
Refurbished - was returned, but has been fixed/cleaned by the retailer to a (nearly) new state.
Factory 2nd - a new product with some minor problem (usually cosmetic) that meant it couldn’t be sold.
Retailers will clearly state whether there is any problem with the actual product itself - sometimes a damaged box will mean a hefty discount, but the item itself is pristine.
Condition: since clearance items are rarely brand new, there may be varying levels of wear. Including:
New - pristine condition
Nearly New - very-near pristine: no noticable blemishes or marks
Lightly Used - may have been used once or twice
Used - has been used, but not extensively. Still working, may have very small signs of wear
Cosmetic Damage - signs of wear or damage on the product. May include chipped paint, scuff marks, etc. Still fully functional.
Products with light use or small amounts of cosmetic damage will rarely be noticeable (a scuff somewhere, or a bent edge) but you can save yourself a large amount of money.
Some sites will ‘grade’ refurbished or clearance products - pay close attention to this. An ‘A+’ grade refurbished product will be in far better condition than a ‘C-’ item.
Don’t forget to check for voucher codes to layer on even bigger savings!
Hopefully these tricks will help you navigate some pitfalls to net some big discounts for your purchases! We’ll be updating this page with more clearance pages and tips, so check back regularly for the latest info! And if you’re hunting for more deals, check out our Deals Page.
