Amazon have finally announced a date for Prime Day 2020 - their annual deal event exclusively for Amazon Prime members. Historically this has taken place mid-July, but due to the COVID-19 crisis, it had to be pushed back to a later date.
They have now confirmed that Prime Day 2020 will take place on Tuesday 13 & Wednesday 14th October 2020. As expected, the event now runs for a full 48-hours, offering a bevy of large discounts, exclusive offers and Lightning Deals across a massive range of Amazon’s products.
What To Expect: Lots of great deals on TVs, kitchen appliances and more!
What Is Prime Day?
Prime Day first started in 2015 - it was a 1-day sale to honour the website’s 20th anniversary. It proved so popular that the company brought it back next year, and over the years it has only grown in scope - expanding from 9 countries to encompass the entire world, and growing from one day to two.
The deals and offers in Prime Day are only open to Amazon Prime members - you’ll have to have an active subscription to make the most of the event. Don’t worry if you’re not a member though - conveniently Amazon are offering a free 30-day trial of the service. You can sign up here - just remember to cancel your subscription before the 30 days are up!
Amazon Prime isn’t just good for this sale - you’ll also net a whole bunch of extras, including access to Prime Video (their version of Netflix), the ability to stream thousands of albums via Prime Music and a library of free eBooks with Prime Reading. All that and free next-day delivery on anything you buy - it’s a helpful little service!
The deals will start at 00:01 on October 13th, and run until 23:59 on October 14th. Plenty of time to do some serious shopping!
What To Expect
Traditionally Prime Day has offered hefty discounts on a massive range of products - the largest discounts are usually on Amazon-branded products such as the Kindle eBook reader or the Fire tablet, but there are usually massive discounts across a wide selection of electricals, technology, gadgets, and more. While you can sometimes find deals on larger appliances, the best deals are reserved for TVs, Soundbars, and Headphones, as well as kitchen appliances such as Mixers or Food Processors. We are also expecting a significant amount of Lightning Deals - limited-time deals that may only be active for a matter of hours, so you’ll have to jump on them quickly before they vanish!
This year Amazon are running a special offer: if you spend £10 on selected small businesses, they’ll give you £10 credit to spend on Prime Day. This offer is active from now until the 13th October - you can find more details of selected shops on their ‘Support Small’ page.
However Prime Day 2020 may be different from the last few years of sales - unsurprising, since 2020 hasn’t exactly been a standard year! It’s been an extremely difficult year for retail, and that has left experts unsure as to the scope of the sales we’re going to see. Since the event has been moved from July to October, it places it far closer to the Black Friday sales than it usually is.
With this in mind, it’s possible that Prime Day will be lighter and less exciting that usual - Amazon may tighten their belts and save the best deals for Black Friday and the approach of the Christmas/New Year sale season. Alternatively, they may decide this is the start of sale season, and go in hard - delivering far bigger discounts than are normally seen.
No matter the result, Kagoo will be there to make sure you’re informed on the best deals and offers available when Prime Day starts!
Getting The Best Deals
Whether you’re looking for a brand new TV or a replacement kettle, here’s a selection of tips that will help you secure the best deals:
Set up Price Alerts on Kagoo for alerts on the best deals for products you’re interested in.
On the morning of the 13th, we’ll be sending out a special Prime Day deals email, with a selection of the best early deals we’ve spotted. If you’re not already receiving our amazing deals email (written by yours truly!) then you can sign up in the box at the bottom of this article.
You can also use the ‘Watch this deal’ functionality on the Amazon app (available for iOS & Android) - it will send an alert to your phone when a relevant deal appears.
Finally, Amazon have added a functionality to Alexa, their virtual assistant. Simply ask “Alexa, what are my Prime Day deals?” for a run-down of current offers and discounts.
Despite all the tips and precautions, there is unfortunately still a chance that deals will pass you by, or the product you want won’t be on sale. However don’t despair - Prime Day is just the first big sale of the holiday season. Now the end of 2020 is (finally) in sight, we can expect more and more deals to appear. We’ve got Black Friday appearing on November 27th, followed closely by the pre-Christmas, Boxing Day and New Years sales. So it may be prudent to hold off pressing the ‘buy’ button if the deal isn’t exactly what you want - there’s a good chance an even better deal will arrive in the weeks to come!
Finally, while Prime Day is all about Amazon deals, that doesn’t mean there won’t be other great offers around. We’re expecting that several other major retailers will take advantage of the buzz around Prime Day, and launch their own sales and events at the same time.
Retailers such as AO, Currys & John Lewis will most likely offer promotions around mid-October to compete with Amazon. You can rest assured that Kagoo will be on the lookout for these alternative sales, and these will be placed on our main Deals Page as soon as we find them. We'll make sure to always find you the best prices for all the products you’re interested in!
