Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Compact cameras are small fixed-lens cameras meant for casual photography and everyday carry. In previous generations compact cameras were significantly less powerful than other types, but modern variants are almost as powerful as SLRs.
Landscape Photography
Given the portable nature of cameras, it’s unsurprising that they are used extensively to take photos of beautiful landscapes all over the world - from desolate hills to tropical beaches and everything in between! However not all cameras are equally suited to take landscape photos: here we have tried to rank the best cameras to take stunning landscape shots for your next holiday!
We’ve concentrated on a number of key attributes: most important of these is optical zoom capability, since it allows you to take detailed photos of particular parts of the landscape from a long way away, and still have them come out in good detail. Weight and battery life are also very important, since you may be carrying your camera with your for a long time while walking around - you want it to be light enough to not be a hassle, and with a good strong battery, so it doesn’t run out of juice mid-way through the trip! Finally we have taken into account several important factors, such as environmental protection (especially water and dust resistance) and whether the camera comes with GPS, in order to pin-point exactly where you took the photo for later reference.
How to Choose a Digital Camera That is Good for Landscape Photography
Optical Zoom
The optical zoom of a camera is a measure of how much the camera can zoom in to the subject using the camera's lens system. An optical zoom is superior to a digital zoom because the zoom is achieved using the optics of lens which means that the full extent of the digital sensor is always used to capture the image.
Maximum Image Resolution
Image resolution refers to the amount of pixels that make up an photo taken on a digital camera. It is measured as the width x the height of the image - so a 1280 x 720 resolution camera can take a photo that is 1280 pixels wide and 720 pixels tall.
Weight
The camera's weight will depend on the type and size of camera. Compact cameras are usually the lightest while digital SLRs will be heavier. Also consider the number and weight of lenses to take when using a SLR.
Waterproof
Waterproof compacts or tough / rugged compacts allow you to take shots in all sorts of weather conditions and even take your camera snorkelling with you. Make sure to check the depth the camera can be used to if you intend to use it underwater at greater depths of for extended periods of time.
Electronic Compass
An electronic compass allows the digital camera to record the direction it was facing when the photo was taken. This is then encoded into the metadata of the photo.
Battery Life
The number of shots per battery charge is the number of photos that the camera will typically take on a single charge of the battery.
GPS
GPS allows the camera to know where it is in the world and to automatically tag each of your photos with the location it was taken at.
Anti-Dust Function
An 'anti-dust' function on a digital camera is a way of making sure that no particles of dust are trapped between the lens and the camera body when changing lenses. There are several different systems for doing this, but most rely on small focusses vibrations to dislodge dust particles and help keep the lens clean.
Dustproof
A dustproof digital camera is one that is resistant to dust, and is sealed so that dust and sand can't get into the lens or the mechanics.
