Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

QWhy do some food processors not have an entry for speeds?
ASome food processors don't have set speed levels (low, medium, high, etc) but instead a knob to gradually increase the speed from low to very high.
QWhat are common accessories for food processors?
AFood processors may come with any or all of these standard attachments: a kneading tool for dough, a set of whisks or beaters, a citrus pressing tool, a tool for mincing meat, or a pasta maker.
QWhat is a 'pulse' function?
APulse turns the food processor on for very short periods at a time - helpful for finishing the final parts of mixing, or reducing stubborn chunks in your mixture.

Food Processor Buying Guide

Food processors are kitchen appliances meant to aid in many of the most common food preperation tasks, such as mixing, chopping, grinding, shredding, etc. By using a variety of powered blades and accessories, food processors can complete prep tasks in seconds, that would otherwise require substancial time and effort!

They can be expensive machines, but make repetitive cooking tasks far easier and faster, so are worth the expense if you do a lot of cooking on a daily basis. We have a vast array of food processors from many of the leading brands, so here is a brief guide of the most important attributes to consider when choosing a food processor.

Bowl Capacity

One of the most important considerations when choosing a food processors is the bowl size. The larger the capacity of your food processor, the more food can be prepared at the same time. This is extremely important if you are cooking for a large family, or routinely bake large cakes, pies or anything that required a lot of preperation. All our food processors have a capacity measured in litres - from small 1.5 litre processors to enormous 7 litre appliances.

Some processors come with several different bowls, specifically for chopping, blending or other functions. In these cases, we also list the individual capacities for these peripheral bowls, so you can be sure that you are buying an applicance that fits your precise specifications.

Power Level/Number of Speeds

All our food processors have a power rating, measured in watts (W). The higher the power level, the more efficient the the appliance will be at chopping and mixing. This in turn will lead to better processed ingredients, and better results!

Most of the food processors listed on our site also have variable speed settings, and therefore can chop/grind/etc at a number of different speeds. This is crucial for getting the best results when preparing food, since harder ingredients will need to be processed at faster speeds, while softer ingredients may require slower speeds to avoid being over-processed and ruined. The appliances we have listed run from simple 2-speed processors all the way up to very advanced 10-speed models.

Functions & Capabilities

As mentioned above, food processors are designed to cover many different functions and common kitchen prep tasks. Many of these require specific tools and settings, so not all applicances will perform them all. The most common are outlined below:

Some processors come with several different bowls, specifically for chopping, blending or other functions. In these cases, we also list the individual capacities for these peripheral bowls, so you can be sure that you are buying an applicance that fits your precise specifications.

Mixing: the most common task for a food processor, and one that every model will perform by default. A whisk or paddle ensures fast and efficient ingredient mixing.

Chopping: chopping food such as vegetables or meats requires a specialist blade, which rotates at high speeds to cut ingrdients.

Shredding: like chopping, but the ingredients are reduced into far smaller pieces.

Grating: helpful for hard cheeses like parmesan - a grater module moves up and down quickly, allowing fast and efficient grating.

Dough kneading: a dough hook attachment allows the processor to easily mix and knead bread dough.

Mincing: a mincing attachment allows you to mince meats such as pork and beef - an important tool for making home-made sausages.

Juice extractor/citrus press: a powerful press squashes fruit to remove juice quickly and efficiently.

Easy-To-Clean

Finally, given how much food processors are used for mixing, chopping, blending and other messy food prep tasks, there will be a lot to clean up when you're finished. With that in mind, buying a processor that is specially marked as 'easy-to-clean' will make the post-cooking cleanup far easier to manage!
