Reasons For

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 Sony Cybershot DSC-RX10
13 Reasons For
66% Bigger Optical Zoom
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 is a 24x optical zoom digital camera. That's 15.7x bigger than the Sony Cybershot DSC-RX10 (8.3x).

The optical zoom of a camera is a measure of how much the camera can zoom in to the subject using the camera's lens system. An optical zoom is superior to a digital zoom because the zoom is achieved using the optics of lens which means that the full extent of the digital sensor is always used to capture the image.

A larger optical zoom allows you to zoom in on the subject without having to move closer. Compared to a digital zoom, using an optical zoom does not result in a loss of image quality.

Bigger Digital Zoom
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 is a 4x digital zoom digital camera. That's 2x bigger than the Sony Cybershot DSC-RX10 (2x).

The digital zoom of a camera is a measure of how much the camera can zoom in by cropping the image received by the camera's sensor. A digital zoom is not as good as an optical zoom as it will result in a reduction in image quality the further you zoom in. This is because fewer of the camera's pixels are being used to capture the image.

A digital zoom allows you to enlarge the subject but this can result in the image becoming blurry. A digital zoom can be used if an optical zoom is not available.

Hugely Longer Maximum Focal Length (35mm Film Equiv)
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 is 720mm maximum focal length, but the Sony Cybershot DSC-RX10 is only a 200mm maximum focal length digital camera (520mm shorter).

'Focal length' is described as the distance between the camera lens and the image sensor - this distance is what determined how 'zoomed in' a shot is when compared to the original view from your eye. Therefore greater focal lengths mean that the camera has the ability to zoom in closer to a subject.

A longer maximum focal length means that the camera is capable of zooming in a much greater distance, allowing you to clearly photograph subjects further away.

Touchscreen
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 has a touchscreen, however the Sony Cybershot DSC-RX10 does not.

On a camera, this means that the digital display on the back of the camera is touch-sensitive, rather than relying on buttons.

Touchscreens are easier and more intuitive to control.

Read more Read less | Edit
Higher Magnification
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 has a magnification of 3.88x. That's 3.18x higher than the Sony Cybershot DSC-RX10 (0.7x).

The lens magnification ratio is the ratio between the true size of the object being photographed and the size of the object when projected on to the camera's sensor.

A higher lens magnification ratio is important for macro photography as it allows you to focus on very small object very close to the lens.

PictBridge
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 supports PictBridge, whereas the Sony Cybershot DSC-RX10 does not support PictBridge.

'PictBridge' is a system that allows the camera to wirelessly connect directly to a printer, without needing to go through a computer connection first.

PictBridge allows users to print off photos far more easily and faster by printing directly from the device, rather than having to download the photos to a PC before printing.

Lighter
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 has a weight of 640g, but the Sony Cybershot DSC-RX10 is a 755g digital camera (115g heavier).

The camera's weight will depend on the type and size of camera. Compact cameras are usually the lightest while digital SLRs will be heavier. Also consider the number and weight of lenses to take when using a SLR.

The lower the camera weight, the easier it will be to carry around and it will also reduce your hand luggage weight when flying.

16 Reasons For
8.1MP Higher Megapixels
The Sony Cybershot DSC-RX10 has a megapixels of 20.2MP, but the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 is only a 12.1MP digital camera (8.1MP lower).

The resolution of the images a digital camera produces is measured in megapixels (MP). One megapixel is equal to 1 million pixels and is a result of the pixel width multiplied by the pixel height of the image. While a higher image resolution generally results in sharper images, only a relatively low megapixel count is required when printing the image at a small size or to display it on a computer screen.

A sensor with more megapixels will be able to capture more detailed photos and the image will appear sharper. Images with more megapixels can also be printed at a larger size.

1mm Shorter Minimum Focal Length (35mm Film Equiv)
The Sony Cybershot DSC-RX10 is a 24mm minimum focal length digital camera, whereas the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 is a 25mm minimum focal length digital camera (1mm longer).

'Focal length' is described as the distance between the camera lens and the image sensor - this distance is what determined how 'zoomed in' a shot is when compared to the original view from your eye. Therefore smaller focal lengths mean that the camera has the ability to zoom out further to take in more of the scene at once.

A smaller minimum focal length means that the camera can take in more of the scene at once, allowing for wide landscape shots.

6,400 Higher Maximum ISO Sensitivity
The Sony Cybershot DSC-RX10 is a 12,800 maximum ISO speed digital camera, whereas the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 is only a 6,400 maximum ISO speed digital camera (6,400 lower).

ISO sensitivity denotes the sensitivity of your camera to available light. Modifying the sensitivity causes the camera to gather more or less light when forming an image. Higher sensitivity gathers more light, which means can lead to a sharper image in low-light conditions. However it may also lead to increased 'noise', meaning the ISO level must be carefully modified to get the best shot.

A higher maximum ISO sensitivity will allow you to take photos in lower light levels without using flash.

Read more Read less | Edit
400,000 Pixels Higher Display Resolution
The Sony Cybershot DSC-RX10 has a display resolution of 1,440,000 pixels, however the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 is only a 1,040,000 pixels display resolution digital camera (400,000 pixels lower).

The display resolution on a display camera denotes how high detail the display is.

High resolutions on the display of your camera means that the photos you take will be shown in higher detail, allowing you to see them more clearly.

Read more Read less | Edit
40 More Battery Life
The Sony Cybershot DSC-RX10 takes 420 battery life, however the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 only takes 380 battery life.

The number of shots per battery charge is the number of photos that the camera will typically take on a single charge of the battery.

More shots per battery charge means you will have to recharge the battery less frequently and reduces the need to carry a second back up battery.

Read more Read less | Edit
Near Field Communication (NFC)
The Sony Cybershot DSC-RX10 supports Near Field Communication (NFC), whereas the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 does not support Near Field Communication (NFC).

Near Field Communication (NFC) is a communication technology used to wirelessly transfer data between devices. In a digital camera, it is used to send photos between the camera and mobile phones and tablets.

Cameras with NFC tech installed will be able to easily send photos to smartphones or tablets without the need for wires.

We're in the process of testing the Sony RX10 expert bridge, which uses the same 1" 20-Megapixel BSI CMOS Exmor R sensor already seen in the excellent RX100 Mk II... Sony is committed to taking its RX camera line further this year. After outing the R...

The RX10 is an audacious kind of bridge but the risk has certainly paid off for Sony. The firm has once again landed with a top-quality camera in a sector where no-one really expected such a shockwave. With the RX10, the bridge market has a new flags...

Panasonic has also worked on the FZ300's image stabilization system. In place of the dual-axis Power O.I.S. image stabilization system of the FZ200, the new model now sports a five-axis Hybrid O.I.S. system. Note, though, that during 4K movie capture...

Once a popular category, the market for enthusiast-grade, all-in-one cameras (aka "bridge" cameras) has been a little moribund in recent years. The new Sony RX10 promises to breathe new life into the high end of that field. While there's been a stead...

Conventional wisdom says that if you want the best pictures, you want interchangeable lenses. The Sony RX10 turns that theory on its head, substituting the interchangeable lenses for just the one fixed lens -- but what a great optic it is! With a bri...

Key Features

Megapixels

The resolution of the images a digital camera produces is measured in megapixels (MP). One megapixel is equal to 1 million pixels and is a result of the pixel width multiplied by the pixel height of the image. While a higher image resolution generally results in sharper images, only a relatively low megapixel count is required when printing the image at a small size or to display it on a computer screen.

A sensor with more megapixels will be able to capture more detailed photos and the image will appear sharper. Images with more megapixels can also be printed at a larger size.

Image Sensor Size

Optical sensor size is one of the most important factors affecting the image quality produced by a digital camera. Compact digital cameras have smaller optical sensors due to the reduced space available in the camera body. Digital SLRs and Mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras (MILCs) have large optical sensors to achieve maximum image quality.

A larger optical sensor produces better quality photographs. A 4/3" sensor size has a 2x crop factor compared to 35mm film, while a 1/4" sensor size is significantly smaller and will result in lower quality images.

Optical Zoom

The optical zoom of a camera is a measure of how much the camera can zoom in to the subject using the camera's lens system. An optical zoom is superior to a digital zoom because the zoom is achieved using the optics of lens which means that the full extent of the digital sensor is always used to capture the image.

A larger optical zoom allows you to zoom in on the subject without having to move closer. Compared to a digital zoom, using an optical zoom does not result in a loss of image quality.

Digital Zoom

The digital zoom of a camera is a measure of how much the camera can zoom in by cropping the image received by the camera's sensor. A digital zoom is not as good as an optical zoom as it will result in a reduction in image quality the further you zoom in. This is because fewer of the camera's pixels are being used to capture the image.

A digital zoom allows you to enlarge the subject but this can result in the image becoming blurry. A digital zoom can be used if an optical zoom is not available.

Maximum ISO Sensitivity

ISO sensitivity denotes the sensitivity of your camera to available light. Modifying the sensitivity causes the camera to gather more or less light when forming an image. Higher sensitivity gathers more light, which means can lead to a sharper image in low-light conditions. However it may also lead to increased 'noise', meaning the ISO level must be carefully modified to get the best shot.

A higher maximum ISO sensitivity will allow you to take photos in lower light levels without using flash.

Weight

The camera's weight will depend on the type and size of camera. Compact cameras are usually the lightest while digital SLRs will be heavier. Also consider the number and weight of lenses to take when using a SLR.

The lower the camera weight, the easier it will be to carry around and it will also reduce your hand luggage weight when flying.
