Reasons For

Nikon Coolpix P7800 Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 III
7 Reasons For
4.2x Bigger Optical Zoom
The Nikon Coolpix P7800 has an optical zoom of 7.1x, whereas the Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 III is only a 2.9x optical zoom digital camera (4.2x smaller).

The optical zoom of a camera is a measure of how much the camera can zoom in to the subject using the camera's lens system. An optical zoom is superior to a digital zoom because the zoom is achieved using the optics of lens which means that the full extent of the digital sensor is always used to capture the image.

A larger optical zoom allows you to zoom in on the subject without having to move closer. Compared to a digital zoom, using an optical zoom does not result in a loss of image quality.

64% Longer Maximum Focal Length (35mm Film Equiv)
Nikon Coolpix P7800 is 200mm maximum focal length. That's 127mm longer than the Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 III (73mm).

'Focal length' is described as the distance between the camera lens and the image sensor - this distance is what determined how 'zoomed in' a shot is when compared to the original view from your eye. Therefore greater focal lengths mean that the camera has the ability to zoom in closer to a subject.

A longer maximum focal length means that the camera is capable of zooming in a much greater distance, allowing you to clearly photograph subjects further away.

30 More Battery Life
The number of battery life on the Nikon Coolpix P7800 is 350, but the Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 III only takes 320 battery life.

The number of shots per battery charge is the number of photos that the camera will typically take on a single charge of the battery.

More shots per battery charge means you will have to recharge the battery less frequently and reduces the need to carry a second back up battery.

24 Reasons For
7.9MP Higher Megapixels
The Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 III has a megapixels of 20.1MP, whereas the Nikon Coolpix P7800 is only a 12.2MP digital camera (7.9MP lower).

The resolution of the images a digital camera produces is measured in megapixels (MP). One megapixel is equal to 1 million pixels and is a result of the pixel width multiplied by the pixel height of the image. While a higher image resolution generally results in sharper images, only a relatively low megapixel count is required when printing the image at a small size or to display it on a computer screen.

A sensor with more megapixels will be able to capture more detailed photos and the image will appear sharper. Images with more megapixels can also be printed at a larger size.

Vastly Bigger Digital Zoom
The Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 III has a digital zoom of 11x, however the Nikon Coolpix P7800 is only a 4x digital zoom digital camera (7x smaller).

The digital zoom of a camera is a measure of how much the camera can zoom in by cropping the image received by the camera's sensor. A digital zoom is not as good as an optical zoom as it will result in a reduction in image quality the further you zoom in. This is because fewer of the camera's pixels are being used to capture the image.

A digital zoom allows you to enlarge the subject but this can result in the image becoming blurry. A digital zoom can be used if an optical zoom is not available.

Vastly Smaller Minimum Aperture Number
The Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 III has a minimum aperture number of 1.8. That's 2.7 smaller than the Nikon Coolpix P7800 (4.5).

In photography, the aperture number refers to the size of the hole in the front of the camera lens, through which light is let through. The larger the aperture, the more light can pass through into the camera's sensor. Photographers can modify this aperture to control the 'depth of field' for their shot - this is how much of the shot is held in focus, and how much is blurred. Aperture numbers are measured in f/stops: rather confusingly a smaller aperture number translates to a larger hole, therefore a larger amount of light will be let through.

A smaller aperture number means that the camera's lens will be able to open wider, letting in more light at once. This is helpful because it allows the camera to quickly take in enough light to form a picture, meaning that the shutter speed will be faster, reducing blur from fast moving subjects. It also means that you can take photos in dimmer light without having to rely on the flash, since you will be able to take in more light at once.

3 Larger Maximum Aperture Number
The Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 III is an 11 maximum aperture digital camera, whereas the Nikon Coolpix P7800 is only an 8 maximum aperture digital camera (3 smaller).

Aperture numbers are measured in f/stops: rather confusingly a larger aperture number translates to a smaller hole, therefore a smaller amount of light will be let through.

A larger aperture number means that the camera's lens will be able to close to a very small hole, letting in very little light. This can be used for very tight depths of field shots, allowing on a single part of the photo to be in full focus, leading to some very nice artistic shots.

12% Shorter Minimum Focal Length (35mm Film Equiv)
The Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 III has a minimum focal length (35mm film equiv) of 25mm, however the Nikon Coolpix P7800 is a 28mm minimum focal length digital camera (3mm longer).

'Focal length' is described as the distance between the camera lens and the image sensor - this distance is what determined how 'zoomed in' a shot is when compared to the original view from your eye. Therefore smaller focal lengths mean that the camera has the ability to zoom out further to take in more of the scene at once.

A smaller minimum focal length means that the camera can take in more of the scene at once, allowing for wide landscape shots.

Built-In Microphone
The Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 III has a built-in microphone, whereas the Nikon Coolpix P7800 does not.

A built-in microphone on a digital camera means it has the capacity to record audio directly from the device.

Having a built-in microphone on your camera means that you can record audio (either alone, or with video) without having to use external microphones.

52% Lighter
The Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 III is a 263g digital camera. That's 136g lighter than the Nikon Coolpix P7800 (399g).

The camera's weight will depend on the type and size of camera. Compact cameras are usually the lightest while digital SLRs will be heavier. Also consider the number and weight of lenses to take when using a SLR.

The lower the camera weight, the easier it will be to carry around and it will also reduce your hand luggage weight when flying.

Nikon's Coolpix P7800 is a good all-rounder. The lens can be used for macros and also for zoomed shots up to 200mm, and the end results are very good. Furthermore, it does a good job in auto mode, but it also has extensive manual controls......

At the heart of Sony's small Cyber-shot RX100 III is a 20-megapixel sensor that can capture images at a quality level that's usually reserved for bulky digital SLRs. That's the major distinction between this compact camera and competing models; it's ...

As the follow up to last year's high-grade compact for enthusiasts, the new P7800 is an intriguing addition to the range. While it adopts much of the same specification as the earlier P7700, including the 1/1.7-inch type 12-Mpix sensor, 28-200mm zoom,...
The adoption of a EVF makes a lot of sense. One of the main issues of small sensor compacts like this was the usefulness of the optical viewfinder.Regardless of the make or model, the viewfinder was small and coverage was restricted to around 70-perc...

Sony's latest iteration of the RX10 is much more than a simple update. While it includes the same Bionz X level processor and what looks on paper at least to be the same or a related 20-Mpix 1?-type BSI sensor, version III has a totally different len...
At first glance, the RX10 III looks like a simple upgrade, but after a quick look at the specifications (and particularly those of the lens), it is so much more than that.  While rivals are still scarce in this segment, the new Sony can be thought ...

Key Features

Megapixels

The resolution of the images a digital camera produces is measured in megapixels (MP). One megapixel is equal to 1 million pixels and is a result of the pixel width multiplied by the pixel height of the image. While a higher image resolution generally results in sharper images, only a relatively low megapixel count is required when printing the image at a small size or to display it on a computer screen.

A sensor with more megapixels will be able to capture more detailed photos and the image will appear sharper. Images with more megapixels can also be printed at a larger size.

Image Sensor Size

Optical sensor size is one of the most important factors affecting the image quality produced by a digital camera. Compact digital cameras have smaller optical sensors due to the reduced space available in the camera body. Digital SLRs and Mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras (MILCs) have large optical sensors to achieve maximum image quality.

A larger optical sensor produces better quality photographs. A 4/3" sensor size has a 2x crop factor compared to 35mm film, while a 1/4" sensor size is significantly smaller and will result in lower quality images.

Optical Zoom

The optical zoom of a camera is a measure of how much the camera can zoom in to the subject using the camera's lens system. An optical zoom is superior to a digital zoom because the zoom is achieved using the optics of lens which means that the full extent of the digital sensor is always used to capture the image.

A larger optical zoom allows you to zoom in on the subject without having to move closer. Compared to a digital zoom, using an optical zoom does not result in a loss of image quality.

Digital Zoom

The digital zoom of a camera is a measure of how much the camera can zoom in by cropping the image received by the camera's sensor. A digital zoom is not as good as an optical zoom as it will result in a reduction in image quality the further you zoom in. This is because fewer of the camera's pixels are being used to capture the image.

A digital zoom allows you to enlarge the subject but this can result in the image becoming blurry. A digital zoom can be used if an optical zoom is not available.

Minimum Aperture Number

Weight

The camera's weight will depend on the type and size of camera. Compact cameras are usually the lightest while digital SLRs will be heavier. Also consider the number and weight of lenses to take when using a SLR.

The lower the camera weight, the easier it will be to carry around and it will also reduce your hand luggage weight when flying.
