At only 5 times zoom factor, the Panasonic HX-DC3 has a quite small optical zoom compared to most of the other camcorders that were launched around the same time as this video camera. Across all the big total megapixels video cameras that came out around the same time as this camcorder the optical zooms range from 1x to 25x.

If you want a bigger optical zoom then you might want to look at the Panasonic HC-X920 ($699) (12x), or the Sony HDR-PJ810 ($1,393.21) (12x) which also has a higher rating.
