At 1,140 times zoom factor, the Vixia HF R500 has a fairly big digital zoom compared to most of the other video cameras of this type and age. Across all the video cameras of this age and spec the digital zooms range from 1.5x to 3,500x, and the average digital zoom is 720x.

We compared all the other 1,140x (digital) video cameras to this camcorder and we think the Canon Legria HF R606 which has better reviews is also worth considering.

If this small total megapixels camcorder digital zoom is not big enough for you then you might want to consider the Panasonic HC-V160 ($149.99) (2,500x).
